Accessibility in Law and Policy

ADA

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is federal legislation that offers protections to individuals with disabilities similar to those provided to individuals on the basis of race, color, sex, national origin, age, and religion. The ADA is sometimes referred to as the Civil Rights Bill for persons with disabilities. ADA guarantees equal opportunity for individuals with disabilities in public accommodations, employment, transportation, State and local government services, and telecommunications.

ADA requires that covered entities provide aids that make the information resource equally accessible to individuals with disabilities, resulting in an experience comparable to that of an individual without disabilities. Covered entities are defined by ADA regulations for Titles II and III and include public accommodations, commercial facilities and many private entities.

The direct implication is that covered entities must provide accessible information resources to individuals with disabilities, including web resources.
