Florida LamdaRail Network Shines on UF
Computing & Networking Services (CNS)
Dave Pokorney
CTO, Director of Engineering - Florida LambdaRail, LLC
The Florida LambdaRail (FLR) Project is gearing up for LambdaRail production. Scheduled to launch next March, the FLR is Florida education's entry into what is commonly called "Internet 3." Especially useful for huge research data bases and image distribution, FLR will make it easier to collaborate with students and colleagues nationwide and beyond. A must for researchers and those involved in collaborative projects.

VoIP - Using the Internet as your Phone
Computing & Networking Services (CNS)
John Madey,
Director of UF Telecommunications
Voice Over Internet Protocols (VoIP) allows you to connect a telephone to your computer to send/receive real-time voice messages. This saves you the expense and overhead of using two separate systems. The VoIP system now on campus will be demonstrated. Guidelines will be presented on how to decide if this will work for you and on how to request this service.

Transparent Reality Simulation as an e-Learning Tool
Department of Anesthesiology
Samsun (Sem) Lampotang, Ph.D.
Associate Professor
Most real systems are opaque in the sense that their inner function and processes are not externally apparent. We will describe and demonstrate transparent reality, an educational simulation technique developed at UF, that is aimed at facilitating the development of mental models in learners.
National Curriculum in Radiology Reporting
Department of Radiology
Chris Sistrom, M.D., MPH
Department of Radiology,
College of Medicine
Radiology reports are the primary work product for non-interventional radiologists. The quality of these important documents is often determined by arbitrary factors and personal "style." A poorly constructed report can be further degraded by poor communication skills on the part of the radiologist or resident. Very little formal didactic material exists to train radiologists in reporting. The Radiology Society of North America has awarded us a grant to develop a web based national curriculum in radiology reporting and our preliminary efforts after just over 1 year of development are the subject of this submission.

GEMS (Graduate Education Monitoring System)
Division of Nephrology, Hypertension, and Transplantation
Dr. Edward A. Ross
Associate Professor
GEMS is an online application to quantitate medical trainee work hours and allow evaluation of their performance by the faculty.
It is a growing concern that medical residents may be working in excess of 80 hour limit regularly that hamper their ability to make medical decisions. There are only few commercial products in the market that do timekeeping. We have come up with a complete package that not only tracks a medical resident's work hours, but also continuously monitors for any ACGME violations. Violations are sent as a report to the concerned person on a regular basis. In addition, it also reminds all the trainees to fill out their work hours whenever due.
It also allows faculty evaluation of trainees. Once the master schedule of rotations is entered during the setup, the application reminds the faculty through email whenever an evaluation is due.
We believe the strongest and novel approach of this program is automated email reminders to concerned parties. Other features include generating customizable reports, secure message board and role based logins.
The application has been running successfully for the past year in several divisions in the Department of Medicine and Pediatrics.

Professional schools struggle with evaluation and assessment at many levels. High stakes examinations are especially problematic. Paper exams require hours of personnel time to create, distribute, track, and dispose of. Security is an ever-present concern. Moving to an electronic format opens an entirely new set of challenges: access control, computer crashes, and hacking to name a few. XAM is a Web-based assessment tool that provides a secure, efficient, and easily managed environment for online examinations. As an open-source, standards-based program, XAM is portable, extensible, and low cost.
